Overview
Spine fractures are a serious condition that can result in severe pain and limited mobility. They occur when one or more of the vertebrae in the spine break or crack, which can cause damage to the spinal cord and nerves. They can cause severe back pain, muscle weakness, loss of bowel, deformity of the spine, limited mobility etc.
The spine specialists at Sarvodaya provide comprehensive care and management for spine fractures with high-end diagnosis, evaluation and treatment.
Some of the surgical procedures for spine fractures include:
- Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty: minimally invasive spine procedures that involve injecting bone cement into the damaged vertebrae to stabilize the spine and alleviate pain. In vertebroplasty, the cement is injected directly into the damaged vertebrae, while in kyphoplasty, a balloon is first inserted into the vertebrae to create a space for the cement.
- Spinal Fusion: In cases where the fracture has resulted in instability of the spine, spinal fusion may be necessary. This involves fusing together two or more vertebrae using bone grafts, metal plates, and screws to create a stable structure.
- Decompression Surgery: If the fracture has caused compression of the spinal cord or nerves, decompression spine surgery may be necessary to remove the pressure. This may involve removing a portion of the vertebrae or other structures that are compressing the spinal cord or nerves.
- Artificial Disc Replacement: In some cases, a portion of the damaged vertebrae may be removed and replaced with an artificial disc to restore mobility and alleviate pain.
