Small Incision Lung Cancer Surgery - First in Faridabad

Sarvodaya Hospital, Sector 8, Faridabad, successfully conducted a lung cancer surgery on a 67-year-old patient using the small incision technique. This surgery was performed through the video-assisted thoracoscopic (VATS) technique by Dr. Naveen Sanchety, Director - Surgical Oncology, and Dr. Arjun Goyal, Senior Consultant & Head - General and Minimal Invasive Surgery.

The patient, a resident of Agra, was suffering from advanced lung cancer. Due to the serious condition of the patient and the progressive cancer in the body, timely detection and surgery were necessary.

Lung Cancer
Describing the surgery, Dr. Arjun explained, "When the patient came to us, he was experiencing difficulty breathing, and coughing up blood. Upon further examination and PET CT-guided biopsy, it was found that the patient had cancer in the left lung and immediate surgery was imperative. Due to the patient's old age, this surgery was high-risk. Typically, lung cancer surgeries involve open surgery where a long incision is made on the chest and back to remove the tumor. However, at Sarvodaya, we performed the first lung cancer surgery using the Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) technique, where a small incision is made to remove the tumor. This is a minimally invasive technique that has set a benchmark in cancer treatment. This procedure for lung cancer treatment is the first of its kind in Faridabad."

Minimally Invasive Surgery for Lung Cancer
Dr. Naveen Sanchety stated, "Shortly after the surgery, the patient's condition began to improve, and now he is capable of performing normal activities. Small incision surgery offers several benefits to the patient such as minimal blood loss, minimal damage to tissues and muscles, and faster recovery. This case demonstrates that with new medical procedures, life-threatening diseases like cancer can be defeated. At Sarvodaya Cancer Institute, we have a multidisciplinary team of senior specialists and modern technology enabling us to treat all types of cancer. Additionally, we ensure complete care for the patient until recovery."
