BOTOX, Not Just A Beautification Tool

Botox or Botulinum Toxin is a neurotoxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum which is responsible for causing “Botulism”. Botulism is a very serious illness that causes gastrointestinal disturbances and paralysis. However, the commercial drug is a highly purified form of toxin which if injected by experts has minimal side effects.

People associate “Botox” mainly with beautification and treating age-related wrinkles and face tightening. But not many know that it is also used as a potent treatment for many Neurological disorders where other conventional drugs fail.

Botulinum toxin injections are the most effective treatment for neurological disorders associated with excessive, uncontrolled overactivity of muscles. Patients with abnormal face, neck, arm, leg, or chest positions or tremulousness are managed effectively with botox injections.

Neuro Conditions Botulinum Toxin Treats

The Botulinum toxin is primarily indicated for neurological disorders in which muscle overactivity is the primary pathogenesis of the disease. The conditions in which this injection is the prime management technique are listed below:

  • Blinking or twitching of the muscles on one side of the face
  • Dystonia
  • Spasticity due to strokes, multiple sclerosis, or brain injury
  • Headache and other painful conditions

How Does Botulinum Toxin Work?

This toxin work by weakening the muscle it is injected in and so the overactivity of these muscles is prevented for some period, however, the effect is temporary. It prevents the release of acetylcholine from nerve endings and hence blocks the signal for contraction. By making sure that injections are just in the right spot, a dramatic response in inhibiting the overactivity of these muscles is achieved.

The aim of the therapy is to reduce muscle spasms and pain and restore normal appearance and function. We at Sarvodaya Healthcare comprise an expert team of neurologists, who are experienced in the management of basic to complex neurological issues. They have a skilled hold in the precise administration of Botox injections. Our centre for neurosciences is well equipped with the latest advancements, comprehensive team and experience.
